According to the Manchester Evening News, Manchester United have identified AS Roma midfielder Lorenzo Pellegrini as a replacement for the departing Marouane Fellaini. The 22-year-old has only spent a year back with the Serie A giants but could already be on his way from the Stadio Olimpico after impressing last season.
Pellegrini’s career started in Roma. He worked his way through the youth ranks before signing for Sassuolo in 2015. He re-joined Roma two years later and is now an integral part of the squad. The Italian international made 37 appearances in all competitions last season as Roma finished third in Serie A, but he might be plying his trade in the Premier League if reports are to be believed.
With Fellaini out-of-contract this summer and potentially leaving United on a free transfer in the coming weeks, the Red Devils will need a replacement. Jose Mourinho already signed Fred from Shaktar Donetsk as replacement for the retired Michael Carrick, but Lorenzo would provide further defensive protection in the middle of the park, potentially allowing their more creative players to flourish.
There’s been no progress past United’s initial interest in the Roma midfielder, but they could make a move in the coming weeks if they really want to bring him to Old Trafford.
Jose knows how to buy players but does’t know how to use them.
