Manchester United in eight-way battle for Belgian wonderkid

According to Voetbal Belgie, Manchester United are in an eight-way battle for Anderlecht midfielder Eliot Matazo.

The 16-year-old has been linked with Borussia Dortmund, Bayern Munich, Red Bull Leipzig, Schalke, Barcelona, Real Madrid and Manchester City, and could be available for free when his contract expires in the summer.

He’s represented the Belgian national team eight times at u16 level, having also captained the side, and could be inundated with offers from suitors in the coming months.

Matazo is yet to make a first-team appearance for Anderlecht, but it appears he never will, as he’s failed to make the first-team matchday squad and could leave in the coming months.

Manchester United are shopping for a midfielder, with Michael Carrick retiring, Marouane Fellaini linked with a move to Besiktas and Ander Herrera a target for AC Milan.

However, Jose Mourinho wants a player who can make an instant impact. Matazo would be a long-term signing given his young age, so he wouldn’t be the only midfielder through the door this summer.

The stiff competition from clubs in the German Bundesliga and Spanish La Liga could also be a stumbling blocks in United’s hopes of landing the teenager’s signature.
