According to The Sun, Manchester United are interested in Barcelona defender Jordi Alba, potentially as a replacement for the ageing Ashley Young. The Spanish international has an uncertain future at the Camp Nou this summer, as his agent Vicente Fores has hit out over a lack of contract talks that were promised a year ago.

United manager Jose Mourinho needs to strengthen the defence for a tilt at the Premier League title next season, after his side finished 19 points adrift of champions Manchester City. The Red Devils have Ashley Young and Luke Shaw as their left-back options, both of whom may not be at the club in 2019, as they’re both out of contract, so Alba could be an ideal replacement.

He joined Barcelona from Valencia in 2012 and has gone on to make over 240 appearances in all competitions. The talented left-back remains a regular in the Barcelona side, but he could be on the move if a new deal isn’t coming his way. Alba would certainly improve United’s defence, but he may not be cheap given his £131m release clause.

Chelsea’s reported interest could be a stumbling block in United’s pursuit, as the Blues’ failure to sign Juventus defender Alex Sandro could see them go all out for the Barcelona man.
