Manchester United are interested in Shakhtar Donetsk midfielder Fred, with Michael Carrick and Marouane Fellaini expected to leave the club this summer, reports the Mirror.
Manchester City are also keen on the 25-year-old as they search for a long-term replacement for Fernandinho, so the Red Devils have stiff competition in the race for his signature.
United manager Jose Mourinho is expecting to lose Carrick to retirement and Fellaini due to his contract expiring at the end of the season, but Fred won’t come cheap. The Daily Star say the Brazilian international is valued at £50m.
Fred joined Shakhtar from Brazilian Serie A outfit Internacional in 2013 and made 149 appearances in all competitions for the Ukrainian Premier League side. He’s a combative midfielder who will provide defensive protection in the middle of the park, something United have been accused of lacking in parts.
Mourinho could yet lose Ander Herrera to AC Milan and Paul Pogba to Real Madrid at the end of the season which will intensify his need to sign Fred. However, City have identified a player whom they believe is the perfect replacement for Fernandinho, so a bidding war could commence.
