According to Marca, Manchester United have made a £53m bid for Mateo Kovacic, with the 24-year-old ‘looking to leave Real Madrid, but he doesn’t appear keen to join the Red Devils this summer. The Croatian international looks on his way out of the Santiago Bernabéu due to a lack of playing time, but he’s believed to be against signing for United.
Kovacic joined Real from Inter Milan in 2015 and has gone on to make 109 appearances in all competitions, winning three Champions League trophies and one Liga title. However, after making just 10 league starts under former head coach Zinedine Zidane, the midfield is seeking a new challenge elsewhere.
United are looking to strengthen their midfield after the loss of Michael Carrick and identified Kovacic as a player who could improve the squad. Jose Mourinho isn’t short on options in the engine room – Fred, Paul Pogba, Nemanja Matic, Ander Herrera, Marouane Fellaini, Scott McTominay – but Kovacic would provide real industry and steel.
Despite United’s interest, however, the Croatian international doesn’t reciprocate their feelings so he may not be on his way to Old Trafford.
