Manchester United have reportedly emerged as surprise contenders to pursue Robert Lewandowski from Bayern Munich during the summer. The Poland international has recently appointed super-agent Pini Zahavi as his new representative, and this has seemingly spread speculation over his future at the Allianz Arena.
According to Kicker, via Metro, United are the sole Premier League club to have approached for the 29-year-old marksman, who has netted 142 goals during his three-and-a-half year stint with the Bavarian giants.
The Bundesliga holders are desperate to keep hold of the marksman beyond the summer, but a potential £80m move is rumoured to be on the cards with Lewandowski considering a final challenge at another elite European outfit.
Despite the speculation, it appears highly unlikely that Mourinho would pursue another attack-minded player after recruiting Alexis Sanchez from Arsenal during the winter period.
The likes of Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial are capable of competing with Romelu Lukaku for the role up front, and there does not seem a need for a new signing, who could unsettle the existing players.
Hence, the focus should lie on the midfield department with Michael Carrick having already announced his retirement at the end of the season, whilst Marouane Fellaini is seemingly close to agreeing a pre-contract with an overseas side with his contract expiring in June.
