Manchester United make decision on £80m forward as Alexis Sanchez closes in

According to Spanish outlet Marca, Manchester United are withdrawing their interest in Real Madrid forward Gareth Bale, with Arsenal’s Alexis Sanchez looking on his way to Old Trafford this month.

Jose Mourinho was linked with a move for the Welsh international, who the Express say is still worth around £80m, but it appears United are happy with the Chilean coming for considerably less money instead.

Bale has struggled with injuries ever since he made the move from White Hart Lane to the Santiago Bernabeu, and his future is up in the air as a result. The 28-year-old has made just six La Liga starts this season, scoring and creating a respectable five goals, however.

He joined the Spanish champions in 2013 for a then-world record £85m fee, and has become one of the best forwards in Europe ever since. Mourinho has long had his eye on him, according to the report, but will concede defeat as he’s content with his current options.

Having the likes of Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Romelu Lukaku and Marcus Rashford in attack, while Anthony Martial and Alexis Sanchez operate in the wider areas is a strong looking frontline.

With United 12 points off leaders Manchester City in the Premier League this season, the title race is arguably over. But the Red Devils could start the next campaign strong if they have Alexis firing on all cylinders.

Bale being in the side would have been a major boost too, but his lofty price tag, injury worries and Real’s reticence to sell him, mean United look set to pull out of the race.
