Manchester United are understood to have made a formal approach to sign England international Harry Maguire from Leicester City during the ongoing transfer window, Sky Sports claims.
United boss Jose Mourinho has highlighted the need for a new centre-back before the transfer deadline and he has supposedly earmarked Maguire as the prime target after his superb showing at the World Cup.
According to Sky Sports, United have now made the first step towards recruiting the former Sheffield United graduate for whom they could part with a fee in the region of £65m.
Nevertheless, the move is not straightforward with United needing to offload one of their existing centre-backs, most possibly Marcos Rojo to recoup part of the transfer funds for the proposed move.
Meanwhile, the Foxes are also understood to have no ambition of offloading the centre-back before next month’s deadline and the move could go down to the wire with Maguire probably the key orchestrator in the deal.
Maguire has recently admitted that he would fancy the prospect of a big-club move elsewhere, though he is not prepared to force through a move from the King Power Stadium this summer.
Not sure that Maguire will be the best buy when it comes to CDs especially if United pay more than 70m. But sometimes a team has to “bite the biscuit” if they want to get back to the top of the pile. Essentially, they must pay whatever the price is to get quality players in all positions. That’s what Real Madrid did a decade or so ago and it has gotten them recognized as the best soccer team in the world. That strategy is also the plan City have been following and currently they are recognized as the best team in the EPL. If you got the money, go for it!!!
