4 goals in 10 starts, £21m release clause: Manchester United in three-way battle for 21-year-old

According to the Mirror, Manchester United have joined Manchester City and Chelsea in the race for AS Roma midfielder Lorenzo Pellegrini. The 21-year-old has been a regular for the Italian side this season, making 14 Serie A appearances.

Pellegrini, who re-joined from Sassuolo for £9m in 2017, has a release clause of £21m – a very affordable price for the three Premier League clubs. And now he’s a regular in the first-team, scoring and creating four goals in 10 league starts, clubs are lining up for his signature.

The Italian international had a successful two years at Sassuolo under manager Eusebio Di Francesco, bagging 11 goals in 50 games, before he returned to the Stadio Olimpico. Pellegrini was also part of the squad that reached the semi-finals of last summer’s u21 European Championship.

Following on from an impressive tournament, the Roma youngster has since been included in big Champions League games this season – featuring against Atletico Madrid and Chelsea. Contracted until 2022, it’s hard to see Roma willingly selling him, but his release clause is so low they may struggle to keep him.

The 21-year-old regularly featuring is all the more impressive given he has the likes of Maxime Gonalons, Daniele De Rossi, Radja Nainggolan, Kevin Strootman and Alessandro Florenzi for competition.

Manchester United, Manchester City and Chelsea can all afford Pellegrini, so long as they’re willing to pay his clause, so agreeing personal terms will be the next step.
