Manchester United are reportedly planning a £50m offer for Tottenham Hotspur defender Toby Alderweireld.
The Belgium international has been reluctant to extend his Spurs stay beyond June 2019 after the club’s hierarchy refused to double his current wages £50000-a-week.
As such, Mauricio Pochettino is facing the prospect of losing his prized defensive asset this summer and United are supposedly weighing up an approach for the Belgian centre-back.
According to The Sun, Jose Mourinho’s side are prepared to lodge a £50m bid for the 29-year-old with the promise of a bumper rise on his current salary at north London.
Alderweireld is undoubtedly one of the Premier League’s best defenders in his position and his current valuation could be regarded as a bargain regardless of his age.
Eric Bailly has been United’s leading performer despite his injury concerns over the past two seasons and Alderweireld could potentially form a permanent partnership with the Ivorian for the next few years.
Phil Jones, Chris Smalling, Victor Lindelof and Marcos Rojo have all earned sufficient opportunities at the heart of the defence but each of them have been prone to positional mistakes which have cost United especially in the away games.
1. Spurs haven’t “refused to double his wages”. Spurs have offered him a contract to 2022, reportedly £125k a year. His agent demanded an extra year and then extra money
2. United wouldn’t get him for £50m. It’ll be at least £75m. Plus £10m a year for 4 years. If that’s your idea of bargain for injury prone 29 year old…well I think it’s a typical Mourinho signing Frankly. Lazy. Can’t be bothered finding an up and coming player, just overpay for one on the way down. Ibrahimovic. Sanchez…
Rubbish, Maueen won’t sell Martial to Spurs (“a rival”) so there’s no way Levy will sell Toby to Manure, who need to understand that the days of “Fergie theft” are long gone!
Blind is not faster, stronger or taller than Rojo Jones Smalling and Bailly… but he is better than all of them… because he is smarter!
Toby should give United another good choice for a CB. With him added to the squad, it gives Mourinho four decent choices of who to play at CB. This should help the club compete on all fronts and cover for the injuries that those who play CB will undoubtedly get. Still, I would rather if United could land a younger, less injury prone CB.
Man u needs to sell martial to chelsea because he’s a flop
My worry is up to now its stories whilst other teams are signing players. Speculations won’t change our team. Sign good wingers, defenders and a midfielder.
Toby is better bring him
Lindelof and smalling can rise to the occasion, all they need is confidence from Jose. In case they need an addition, I’ll prefer big money for E.g. Varane
