Manchester United have reportedly joined the pursuit of highly-rated German midfielder Leon Goretzka. The 22-year-old will enter the final six months of his contract in the New Year, and he is free to discuss a pre-contract with a club based overseas.
According to Sky Sports News, the Red Devils have expressed their interest in the young playmaker, who was part of Germany’s Confederations Cup winning side earlier in the summer. Starting in a central midfield role, Goretzka has developed the tendency of scoring regularly of late, contributing six goals in just 12 appearances for Joachim Loew’s side.
He has also netted four times for Schalke in the first-half of the season, and he looks on course to better his career-high of five goals achieved during the previous campaign. Aside from United, the likes of Juventus, Barcelona, Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur, have been credited with an interest, but Schalke could yet commit him to a new contract after having offered the chance to become the highest-paid player in their history.
Goretzka has mostly excelled in the central midfield position where he has contributed four of his goals in just seven outings (whoscored), and he could prove the perfect foil for Paul Pogba and Nemanja Matic in a three-man midfield. With Marouane Fellaini looking more likely to leave Old Trafford, United have the opportunity to free up additional wages, and they could potentially lure him with a significant wage rise alongside a bumper signing-on fee next summer.
