Former Arsenal star Paul Merson has gone on to state his belief that Manchester United star David De Gea is the best goalkeeper in the world at the moment.
David De Gea joined Manchester United from Atletico Madrid back in the summer of 2011 and while there were initial concerns regarding his potential success at Old Trafford, the Spaniard has gone on to firmly establish himself as one of the most important players for the Red Devils in recent years.
De Gea has produced a number of wonderful performances during his time at United so far and it would be fair to state that the Red Devils’ struggles in recent years would have been even worse if the 26-year-old was not present in goal over the past few seasons.
As a result, many have labeled De Gea as one of the best goalkeepers in the world and now Arsenal legend Paul Merson has gone on to even hail the ex-Atletico Madrid star as the best player in his position, ahead of the likes of Manuel Neuer and Thibaut Courtois.
Merson wrote in his column for the Daily Star, “David De Gea is without doubt the best goalkeeper in the world right now. It’s not even close either. Manuel Neuer and Thibaut Courtois are great keepers too but he’s making sensational saves week after week.
“If United win the title he will have been a big reason why. His save in the Champions League this week was world class, but it’s almost becoming normal for him. Some of the saves he makes are mind-blowing.
“It took him a while to get used to playing in the Premier League but he’s the best keeper in it now. No-one else even comes close.
“He’s playing for one of the biggest clubs in the world too and that brings a huge amount of pressure but he handles it so well. If De Gea doesn’t get the credit he deserves in Spain it’s because he’s not playing there for Real Madrid. But United know what they have – a world beater.”
