Manchester United have reportedly made contact with midfielder Marco Asensio over a potential transfer next year. The Spain international is currently in the ranks of Real Madrid for whom he has been in and out of the starting lineup this season.
According to Don Balon, United are prepared to pay as much as £177m for the attacker, who Jose Mourinho sees as his marquee signing for next summer’s transfer window. It is added that the Europa League holders have already tabled a five-year contract worth £24m-a-year as they seek to lure the 21-year-old from the clutches of Zinedine Zidane’s side.
Asensio had contributed seven goals and two assists in all competitions this season, but he is still understood to be unsettled by the fact that he has been benched for the key games. The former Mallorca graduate has started from the bench for the Champions League outings versus Tottenham Hotspur and Borussia Dortmund this season with Isco preferred in the number 10 role.
The forward signed an extension earlier in September which sees him contracted until the summer of 2023, and this could prove a potential stumbling block for United, who do not have a good association with the European champions – since the David de Gea saga in 2015.
