Manchester United ready to discuss three-year deal with 30-year-old midfielder

Manchester United are reportedly planning to reward Juan Mata with a new contract once they return from their pre-season tour of the United States.

Jose Mourinho’s side have begun their pre-season in a relatively slow manner with three draws, though one of those have resulted in a victory via a penalty shoot-out.

During this period, Mata has been one of the players who has impressed with his showing and Metro suggests that Mourinho has an extension planned for the Spain international.

According to Metro, the Portuguese tactician is prepared to reward the midfielder with a fresh three-year contract – a two-year extension on his current deal – to prolong his stay until June 2021.

It is added that the move is being done to preserve the Spaniard’s transfer value for the coming seasons after the club failed to find any strong admirers for the 30-year-old this summer.

Mata has not quite managed to showcase a consistency to his game in recent years and he may have to contend with a bench role when the team is up to full strength next term.

Regardless of this, the Spaniard has previously indicated that he is content at Old Trafford and this should enhance United’s prospects of extending his current £150,000-a-week contract.

Mata has already featured extensively for United in their pre-season tour and Mourinho has hinted that he could be among the starters for next month’s league opener against Leicester City.
