Manchester United have reportedly begun contract discussions with first-team duo David de Gea and Marcos Rojo. The pair are currently contracted to United until the summer of 2019, though De Gea has a 12-month extension clause attached to his existing deal.
According to The Mail, United are close to finalising an extension with De Gea, who has previously attracted interest from European champions Real Madrid. The Red Devils have not received a transfer approach from Los Blancos since the failed move in 2015, and it is suggested that a contract extension would fend off any pending interest from Zinedine Zidane’s side.
Meanwhile, Rojo is the other player, the club want to commit for the long-term. The Argentine has been used sparingly since his comeback from a long-term knee injury, but he is still regarded as one of Jose Mourinho’s key players, having featured 43 times over the course of the previous campaign.
United are comfortably placed in terms of options at the heart of the defence, and Rojo’s versatility allows him to slot into the left-back/left wing-back position, though Mourinho has preferred to utilise the Argentine primarily in the central defensive role.
Rojo has managed just eight appearances in the United shirt this campaign, but he can expect more gametime over the next month with United due to feature across three competitions, which include a key Champions League round of 16 first-leg tie at Sevilla.
