Manchester United agree on £35m deal for potential second summer signing – report

Manchester United are moving closer towards signing Fabinho from Monaco after agreeing a £35 million fee, according to Corriere dello Sport. United are set to pay only £30.6 million upfront with the remaining £4.4 million likely to come in the form of add-ons. The Ligue 1 champions have been unable to retain most of their star players, despite a spectacular campaign. Fabinho will become the latest departure from the French club. After being linked with the midfielder for the last few months, United seem to have taken the plunge.

The decision may have effectively ended any interest in Chelsea midfielder Nemanja Matic, who has been linked with a move to Old Trafford in the last few weeks. Fabinho has also been monitored by several other Premier League clubs, but it is understood that United are in pole position to land the 23-year-old.

A defensive midfielder has been top of Jose Mourinho’s wishlist for several months now. Concerns about Michael Carrick’s longevity has been one of the key factors behind this decision. Even though Carrick has signed for another year, this may very well be his last at Old Trafford. A world class defensive midfielder would be able to take the pressure off Ander Herrera, who can make a significant impact going forward.

Fabinho was instrumental for Monaco as the club managed to win the French league title for the first time in almost 2 decades, while also reaching the Champions League semi-final. He made 37 appearances in the league, and came up with nine goals and three assists. The Brazilian also stayed injury free and managed to make 55 appearances in all competitions. If United are indeed about to close the transfer at £30 million, it would represent fantastic value considering the exorbitant transfer values being mentioned for players these days. At 23 years of age, Fabinho has the potential to contribute in the United team for a decade.

His current contract with Monaco runs until 2021. Jose Mourinho has made it clear that he wants new signings to come to the squad before the pre-season starts on July 9.
