Manchester United could sign this 23-year-old midfielder — Real Madrid ready to sell

Manchester United could potentially enter the race to sign Mateo Kovacic when the transfer window reopens on New Year’s day. The Croatia international has been sparingly used under manager Zinedine Zidane, and his future has been put into question amid Los Blancos’ average La Liga form.

According to The Manchester Evening News h/t Don Balon, Mourinho is on the lookout for fresh reinforcements in his midfield with the likes of Marouane Fellaini and Michael Carrick likely to leave Old Trafford in the summer.

United had allegedly failed with an approach to sign the 23-year-old earlier in July, and Don Balon suggests that the European champions could sanction the midfielder’s sale at the right price next month.

Los Blancos have already fallen 14 points behind leaders Barcelona with a game in hand, and Kovacic could be one of those sacrificed to rebuild the squad after an embarrassing 3-0 defeat at the hands of the Catalan giants prior to the winter break.

Though Kovacic has not cut it with the Bernabeu outfit, his raw potential on the ball easily outclasses the likes of Ander Herrera and Fellaini, while wide range of passing could significantly improved United’s link-up play on the attack.

Manchester United have endured a recent average run in the English top-flight, and the Premier League title looks visibly out of sight after a third consecutive draw. Mourinho’s men are currently third in the standings, 14 points adrift of leaders Manchester City, who have a game in hand.
