Manchester United star explains his controversial action against Everton

Manchester United striker Romelu Lukaku explains why he provocatively celebrated after scoring against his former side Everton.

Romelu Lukaku enjoyed a number of successful seasons at Everton but he did not leave the Toffees for Manchester United under the best of circumstances over the summer, having angered the fans by his constant public plea to depart from Goodison Park throughout the course of last season.

Therefore, Lukaku was roundly booed by the travelling Everton supporters during their clash against Manchester United on Sunday and perhaps as a reaction to the poor reception, the striker celebrated exuberantly after finding the back of the net in the second half.

While many players tend to have muted celebrations if they score against their former clubs, Lukaku certainly did not hold back after finding the net and the 24-year-old has now gone on to explain his actions, which is certain to anger the Everton supporters even further.

Following United’s 4-0 victory at Old Trafford, Lukaku said of his celebration, “I mean, it’s another goal and I’m happy with the win. It [the celebration] was just a bit of banter, after [they cheered] the free-kick I missed.”
