Manchester United are reportedly close to rewarding goalkeeper David de Gea with a bumper deal. The Spain international is presently contracted at Old Trafford until the summer of 2019, though United have the option of a 12-month extension.
De Gea has been in fine form for the Red Devils over the course of the season, and he has picked 16 clean sheets in the Premier League, which puts him in pole position to secure his maiden ‘Golden Glove’.
According to The Sun, United are now seeking to commit De Gea for the long-term, and Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s departure has enhanced their chances to do so, prior to this summer’s World Cup.
As per the report, the Swede’s exit has freed up the funds for United, and the club’s hierarchy are prepared to reward De Gea with a £350,000-a-week contract, which would make him the club’s second highest earner behind Alexis Sanchez.
The speculation linking De Gea with Real Madrid has refused to cease since the botched transfer during the summer of 2015, but Los Blancos appear to have switched their attention elsewhere, knowing the Spaniard is now settled at Old Trafford.
De Gea is unquestionably United’s sole world-class player based on his exceptional performances over the campaign, and a contractual extension prior to the World Cup would surely bring a sense of relief among the United fans.
