Manchester United appear to have suffered another injury blow on international duty after Phil Jones sustained a hamstring problem in England’s 0-0 draw versus Germany on Friday night, The Express reports.
The centre-back made a tremendous goal-line clearance to deny Germany’s Leroy Sane, but he soon looked in discomfort clutching his left hamstring. Joe Gomez was brought in place of Jones in the 25th minute of the game, and the debutant put in a solid performance for an experimental Three Lions side.
United have been plagued by injuries this season – more so in the midfield department where the club have missed key players including Paul Pogba, Marouane Fellaini and Michael Carrick. The trio are currently in normal training at Carrington and are set to play a key role in the congested festive schedule.
Jones had been struggling with a knee issue during the October international break, and his fitness issues have once again propped up as a concern for United – given he has been the mainstay at centre-back this term.
Manchester United do not face Newcastle United until a week on Saturday but a lengthy injury for Jones could force Mourinho to revert to the conventional 4-2-3-1 formation – unless he plays Victor Lindelof or Axel Tuanzebe in his three-man backline.
