‘Manchester City are better’ — Man United won’t win the Premier League title, says Liverpool Legend

Former Liverpool legend-turned-pundit Steve Nicol has backed Manchester United to finish in the top-four but doubts their chances of securing the Premier League title.

Jose Mourinho’s side have been fairly active in the transfer window with a fee in excess of £135m spent on the likes of Victor Lindelof, Romelu Lukaku and most-recently Nemanja Matic.

Speaking on ESPN FC, the 55-year-old does not feel the signing of Matic will propel United to the English crown but backs them to finish in the Champions League positions ahead of ex-club Liverpool, he said:

“I don’t think it is no. I think no question they get in the top four. I’m sure that top four isn’t Mourinho’s ambition. I’m certainly sure it isn’t the board or the owner’s ambition. But the fact is that for me City are ahead of this team, Chelsea the defending champions are ahead and Spurs, you can’t count them out.

“They’ve been as consistent in the Premier League over the last two or three season as any other team without winning the Premier League. So Man United definitely top four but one of the favourites for the Premier League? I don’t think so.”

The Red Devils have enjoyed a good pre-season after having won five out of their six outings – including the penalty shoot-out win over Real Madrid. Despite this, Mourinho is likely to want another world-class attacker in his ranks with the club holding just the eighth-best scoring record in the Premier League last term.

Jose Mourinho also created the unwanted history of most draws (15) in a single league campaign for United and a goal-scoring winger will remain his top priority for the new season, which starts with a European Super Cup game against Real Madrid on Tuesday. Manchester United will be without central defensive duo Eric Bailly and Phil Jones for the Skopje clash with both serving two-match suspensions.
