Manchester United defender Luke Shaw is reportedly considering a permanent switch to Southampton in the January transfer window amid his reduced gametime under Jose Mourinho this season.
According to The Mirror, the England international is eager to seal a return to St.Mary’s where he could emerge as a potential replacement for Manchester City-linked Ryan Bertrand.
Bertrand has been identified as the Citizens’ top target following Benjamin Mendy’s season-ending injury, and the Saints are seemingly prepared to cash in on his services.
The £70,000-a-week player has managed just two appearances in the League Cup this term, and his chances of making a Premier League comeback look bleak with the likes of Ashley Young, Daley Blind and Matteo Darmian preferred ahead of him for the left-back role.
The 22-year-old currently has just over 18 months left on his United contract, and it is suggested that the club may not wait until the summer for his proposed sale.
Shaw has developed a shrewd relationship with Mourinho over the past year, and a return to the South Coast could favour both parties as United could make a decent sum, which could be reinvested in other areas of the pitch.
