‘This is a massive game’ — Paul Merson gives his prediction for Manchester United vs Liverpool

Sky Sports pundit Paul Merson has given his prediction for Saturday’s early kick-off between Manchester United and Liverpool at Anfield.

Jose Mourinho’s side have been quick off the blocks this term with six wins and a draw in seven Premier League matches. As a result, United are second only to Manchester City on goal difference, and a victory over the Reds would be ideal to put the pressure on their cross-city rivals.

United have remained unbeaten in their previous three league trips to Anfield, and Merson can’t see a change in this statistic with Liverpool missing the services of Sadio Mane through a hamstring injury. Nevertheless, the former Arsenal star predicts a 1-1 draw for the game with the Reds likely to play on the front foot with the same home advantage.

“This is a massive game, but I just don’t see how Liverpool win without Sadio Mane. I half-fancied them with Mane, but I can’t see it now. Manchester United are a better team but Liverpool’s home advantage should help them get a draw,” he said.

Manchester United had to settle for a 2-2 draw versus Stoke City after the September international break, and there will be a few jitters in their ranks, amid the fitness concerns of a few first-team players. Phil Jones and Romelu Lukaku were initially deemed doubtful for the Liverpool clash, but both are likely to be passed fit – with the latter having represented Belgium from the bench in midweek.
