Michael Owen believes that Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho should stick to a four man backline.
Manchester United romped their way to a comfortable 4-1 victory over CSKA Moscow on Thursday night and the Red Devils most certainly impressed many with their stunning performance during the encounter.
Former United striker Michael Owen has been left very impressed with United’s performance on the night and said following the game that the Premier League giants are going through a sea of change towards becoming a force in English football once again.
Owen told BT Sport, “There’s a sea change. I’m feeling it watching them. We followed United when they won the Europa League last season. Even though they won that, I still didn’t look at them and think ‘wow they can blow any team away’.
“They always only scored one a lot of the time. It always felt the opposing team had a chance against them. But this season, they are scoring too many goals and they look so solid.”
However, Owen was not completely convinced with United’s three man backline consisting of Eric Bailly, Chris Smalling and Victor Lindelof on the night and urged Mourinho to stick with the tried and tested four man defence.
He continued, “We have mentioned the goalkeeper – he’s unbelievable. I’m not sure about the three at the back – I think they look a lot better with four.
“The defence was never going to get tested against CSKA Moscow because they were so dominant. I think I prefer the four, but they look unstoppable at the moment.”
