According to reports from the Daily Express, Manchester United are set to offer midfielder Michael Carrick a brand new contract.
Michael Carrick who was linked with Arsenal last summer has undoubtedly been a wonderful servant to Manchester United since joining the club from Tottenham Hotspur back in the summer of 2006 and the Englishman has been crucial in helping the Red Devils win numerous honours over the years.
As a testament to his importance, Carrick who reportedly earns £80,000 a week currently was handed a one-year extension by United last season despite his advancing years and the club certainly felt that the 35-year-old would still prove to be a key component of the squad.
However, Carrick struggled for regular minutes on the pitch following the arrival of Jose Mourinho as manager over the summer and it looked like the midfielder’s age had finally caught up with the ex-West Ham United star during the current campaign.
To allay such concerns though, Carrick has managed to fight his way back into the starting lineup in recent times and it would be fair to state that the presence of the England international at the middle of the park has brought about a drastic improvement in the Red Devils’ overall performances.
Mourinho has been very impressed with the impact Carrick has made over the past few games and even hinted that he would want to keep hold of the veteran beyond the end of the current campaign.
The Portuguese manager had said, “Michael is 35 years old and it is very sad to know that time flies for everyone of us. He is such a fantastic player and I’ve always loved him.
“It is just a pity instead of being his manager when he was 25, I am his manager when he is 35. But I am lucky I’ve still got Michael Carrick – and probably for one more season.”
Now in a further development, the Daily Express have gone on to claim that United have already started the process of extending Carrick’s stay at Old Trafford and are readying a yearlong extension to his current deal at the club.
Carrick is a rare player who manages to get the best out of his teammates on the pitch and United should surely endeavor to keep the midfielder for as long as possible.
