Mourinho preparing a £60 million bid in hunt for a midfielder

Jose Mourinho didn’t give up on signing Tottenham’s Eric Dier and is ready to go all-in to bring the defensive midfielder to Old Trafford.

Man United are still looking to add a top midfielder in this offseason, and the England international is at the top of Mourinho’s wish list, but Spurs are reluctant to sell, at least for now. Although Mou thought that £40m would be enough to lure Dier away from White Hart Lane, it seems that he will need to fork out £60m for the player who can also play in the heart of the defense.

That’s why he reportedly instructed the executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward to pay whatever it takes for the former Sporting Lisbon man after the pursuit of Nemanja Matic resulted in failure. However, Spurs manager Mauricio Pochettino is not interested in letting Dier and United will have to submit the offer Tottenham can’t refuse.

Mourinho wants to continue strengthening his squad after a blockbuster £75m move for striker Romelu Lukaku and is now looking to add a player or two in the midfield as well. Michael Carrick got a one-year extension deal and will stay at Old Trafford for the upcoming season, but the Portuguese tactician is eager to find a long-term replacement for the newly-appointed captain.

The official move could be expected in the coming days, especially if the Red Devils fail to bring Fabinho or Bakayoko from Monaco, and it looks like Mourinho prefers Dier over them, but it will be hard to strike a deal with Premier League rivals.

Eric Dier has a running contract which expires in 2021, and although the player would like the opportunity to work under Mourinho and play as a defensive midfielder, Tottenham will definitely do anything they can to keep him in the capital.
