New Manchester United midfielder Nemanja Matic has described his debut for the Red Devils against Sampdoria as strange despite impressing during the encounter.
Manchester United continued their fine pre-season campaign with a 2-1 victory over Italian outfit Sampdoria on Wednesday night and apart from the win, the match was notable due to the fact that new arrival Nemanja Matic made his debut on the evening.
Matic featured for the first 45 minutes of the encounter and proved exactly why United paid £40million for his services as the Serbian international put in a commanding performance at the middle of the park, which helped the Red Devils dominate the clash.
Following the game, manager Jose Mourinho went on to label Matic as a midfield genius and fans as well as pundits alive have all gone on to praise the 29-year-old for his display.
Matic also had his say about the debut and explained that although the occasion was special, it felt strange to him as the match was his first during the current pre-season after having been training in isolation at Chelsea throughout the summer.
The former Benfica star said, “It was nice to play in front of our supporters. The stadium was full of Manchester United supporters and that was special for me and I’m happy to make my debut for such a big club.
“It was strange because the team has played a good pre-season. I trained alone in London and it was strange for me but I tried to give my best to control the game well to give the balance and for the first game it was good for me.
“Step by step I’m sure I will be better and I hope that I will help the team to achieve something this season.”
