Manchester United have reportedly switched their attention to signing Real Madrid youngster Marco Asensio at the end of the season. The Spaniard is regarded as one of the hottest young prospects in world football, but he has yet to cement a regular role under Los Blancos boss Zinedine Zidane.
According to Don Balon, Jose Mourinho is prepared to end his long-term interest in Bale owing to his multiple injury concerns over the past 18 months. The report adds that the self-proclaimed Special One will instead focus on signing Asensio, who offers better value for money, being seven years younger than the Wales international.
Asensio currently has a staggering £442m release clause in his contract due to expire in 2023, but United are still confident of convincing Florentino Perez into a sale with a big-money offer in seven months’ time.
The Spain international has been ignored by Zidane for the big games this term, and it is suggested that Mourinho will assure the attacker with a starting spot in order to lure him away from the European champions.
Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford have flourished in the left-wing role, which is Asensio’s natural position, but he has shown the potential to adapt to different positions across the attack. Asensio has notched seven goals for Real Madrid in all competitions this campaign.
