Manchester United are among the top European clubs monitoring the situation of Atletico Madrid defender Jose Gimenez. The Uruguay international has fallen down the pecking order at Wanda Metropolitano this term with Stefan Savic and Diego Godin the preferred picks for Diego Simeone at the heart of the defence.
According to The Mirror, United boss Jose Mourinho could be tempted to lodge an offer in the upcoming transfer window for a defender, who has previously been monitored by the club’s scouts. Gimenez currently has a £58m release clause on his contract extension signed last summer, but it is claimed that Atleti could accept a lesser sum in order to part ways with the centre-back in the New Year.
United, are however, not alone in the pursuit of the former Danubio youngster with Juventus also keeping a close watch on the proceedings. The Serie A holders are still on the search for a new centre-back to replace Leonardo Bonucci, who left for top-flight rivals AC Milan during the last transfer window.
Mourinho has found it hard to find the right combination in central defence owing to Phil Jones’ persistent injury concerns, and Gimenez could emerge as the perfect partner to Eric Bailly, although the Ivorian has endured his own fitness issues of late. Victor Lindelof has shown signs of his old self after impressing in recent Premier League games, but the Swede is still vulnerable to mistakes – as evidenced during the 2-1 defeat at Huddersfield Town last month.
