Official: Jose Mourinho gives positive injury update on Eric Bailly

Eric Bailly Man United

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has confirmed that defender Eric Bailly could return to first-team duties prior to Tuesday’s League Cup clash against Swansea City.

The centre-back sustained a minor knock on international duty with the Ivory Coast, and he has since missed the games against Liverpool and Benfica in the Premier League and Champions League respectively.

Speaking at his pre-match press conference prior to the Huddersfield match, the 54-year-old revealed that he could have the central defender back in action in the coming week, he said: “I expect Eric Bailly to be back next week.”

In the absence of Bailly, Chris Smalling is likely to partner Phil Jones at the heart of the defence, and the combination has worked well until now with clean sheets in back-to-back outings.

Manchester United visit newcomers Huddersfield Town for the first time in 46 years, and they will fancy their chances of attaining three points to maintain the pressure on table-toppers Manchester City.

With key league games against Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea coming along – prior to the next international break, Bailly’s return is likely to be a huge boost as Jones looks a lot more comfortable in the Ivorian’s presence.
