Sky Sports pundit Paul Merson has predicted Manchester United to finish third in the Premier League following a frustrating transfer window where Jose Mourinho could not secure his preferred targets.
United looked pretty average during pre-season as they picked up just a solitary victory in normal time but they have nevertheless begun the league campaign on a high after a close-fought 2-1 triumph over Leicester City.
Speaking prior to that game, Merson said that United are unlikely to come close to the English crown and the former Arsenal man predicted United to finish behind both Manchester City and Liverpool in the standings.
“Manchester United are a long way off, but I think they’ll be third. This season, it just doesn’t seem a happy camp,” he told Sky Sports. “The manager doesn’t give that aurora of excitement and thinks he might have bitten off more than he can chew. I think by Christmas it’ll be ‘watch this space’. They’ll either be top, which I can’t see, or that’ll be it.”
Obviously, United have not managed to close the gap on Pep Guardiola’s side with Fred being the only fundamental summer signing but no supporter would want to see the sight of two of their fierce rivals finishing above them.
Mourinho’s side were not entirely fluent during the Premier League opener versus the Foxes but the fans can surely remain optimistic for the near future where United can make the most of a fixture list, where does not appear daunting on paper.
