Manchester United legend Peter Schmeichel has gone on to state that Manuel Neuer is ahead of David De Gea as the best goalkeeper in the world at the moment.

David De Gea has enjoyed a meteoric rise since joining Manchester United back in 2011 and although the Red Devils have endured a lot of struggle over the past few seasons, the Spaniard has managed to consistently produce magnificent performances.

The wonderful quality of De Gea was on full display during United’s drab 0-0 draw against Liverpool on Saturday after the 26-year-old produced a sensational save to deny Joel Matip from handing the Reds a victory at Anfield.

Following his performance against Liverpool, many have gone on to laud De Gea as the best goalkeeper in the world but United legend Peter Schmeichel does not quite agree with such an assessment and has stated that Bayern Munich star Manuel Neuer remains the best in the position at the moment.

When asked if De Gea was the best goalkeeper in the world, Schmeichel replied, “I get asked this question all the time, ‘who’s the best in the world?’ My favourite goalkeeper in the world at the moment is Manuel Neuer. It has been for a long, long time.

“That’s because of the style of goalkeeping he gives to the world. He’s a brave young lad, he was a brave young lad. I watched him when he was at Schalke at Old Trafford, he was actually making a very similar save to that.

“And my eyes are like this, ‘who is this young fella?’.  He’s brave, he’s playing so far out of his goal, he’s one of few goalkeepers who is actually off his line, far off his line, challenging, bringing the game to him, taking control.  I like him for that.”
