Arsenal goalkeeper Petr Cech has spoken fondly about the progress made by David de Gea at Manchester United. The Spain international has transformed into one of the world’s best shot-stoppers during his six-and-a-half year stay at Old Trafford, and Cech has admitted that the 27-year-old has single-handedly secured points for the Red Devils.
Petr Cech on David de Gea: “Why I rate him is that he was struggling at the start. He had problems adapting to the league, people were saying ‘he’s too weak, he’s too slim, he doesn’t make saves’ this and that, he overcame that. That shows you his real strength.” #mufc

Petr Cech: “If you imagine United without David de Gea, probably they would have less points, he makes so many important saves during the game.” #mufc

De Gea joined Manchester United under Sir Alex Ferguson in the summer of 2011, and he was prone to making some unforced mistakes which brought plenty of questions over his future at the club. However, as the years have gone by, the Spaniard has improved leaps and bounds, and Cech had the opportunity to witness De Gea’s best showing ever from the opposite end as he made 14 saves during United’s 3-1 away win over Arsenal in December.
There have been plenty of shot-stoppers, who have had one-off performances at the big stage, but De Gea has maintained his consistency over the course of the season with his point-blank interceptions against Liverpool and Southampton adding up to the points, the club have garnered from his presence.
De Gea is presently contracted to United until the summer of 2019, but talks are said to be ongoing over a long-term contract which would make him one of the highest-paid players in the world whilst fending off any impending interest from Real Madrid.
