Former Manchester United defender-turned-pundit Phil Neville has backed Jose Mourinho to lead the Red Devils’ to Premier League success in his second-season in-charge. United are the second highest spenders in the top-flight this summer with over £140m paid on the likes of Victor Lindelof, Romelu Lukaku and Nemanja Matic.
Mourinho could not quite find the right combination during his maiden campaign at Old Trafford last season with injuries restricting his options at the back. The likes of Phil Jones and Marcos Rojo revived their flagging careers at United last term but the latter sustained a cruciate knee ligament injury in the tail-end of the season which has ruled him out until November at least.
Neville, who featured for United between 1994-2005, feels that it could be a battle of the Manchester clubs in the upcoming season with the Red Devils likely to come up triumphs due to Mourinho’s knack of winning titles in his second year at a club.
“The two Manchester clubs will fight it out for the league, but Jose Mourinho’s track record of winning titles in his second season and the buys they’ve made this summer mean I am going for United,” he is quoted as saying by The Express.
Manchester United start their new Premier League season next weekend with a game at home against West Ham United, who could have former Red Devil Javier Hernandez leading the line. Prior to this, United have the chance to win some early silverware with a European Super Cup meeting versus Real Madrid in Skopje next Tuesday.
