It was feared that Manchester United’s haggling over Pedro’s price would come back and bite them in the behind, and now it has happened. Pedro is reportedly now on his way to Chelsea after the London club agreed a fee with Barcelona in a matter of hours.
Ed Woodward flew to Barcelona on Monday in order to ease the deal along but his trip was reportedly fruitless as Barcelona refused to budge on their €30m asking price.
United of course were prepared to pay that, but it was their offer of €25m upfront and €5m in variables that Barcelona would not accept but Chelsea, monitoring the situation have reportedly swooped in and offered the Catalan club €28m up front with €2m in variables.
With Barca happy to accept Chelsea’s offer, a supposed ‘gentleman’s agreement’ between Pedro and United has gone out of the window and the World Cup winner has now flown to London to undergo a medical.
It is being reported that United ended their interest in the player but many are sceptical given Woodward flew to Spain just 2 days ago to get the deal done.
The saga seems rather embarrassing, and paints chief exec Ed Woodward in a bad light given that United have been trying to get the deal done for weeks, whilst it took Chelsea days perhaps even hours to wrap up the transfer.
