Player Ratings: Manchester United 3 Sunderland 0 – Magnificent Martial

De Gea – A routine performance by the Spaniard who had a relatively quiet game. Clean sheet was his reward. 6

Valencia – Had plenty of the ball and did brilliantly to get involved going forward. Strong contribution. 7

Smalling – Won all his aerial duals and most of his challenges. Stood his ground and continues to impress. 8

Blind – Comfortable at the back but his spectacular pass was his standout contribution. Subbed off after a scare. 7

Darmian – Solid contribution on his opposite fullback position. Crossing was a step up on his previous outings. 7

Schneiderlin – Accurate with his passing and distributed the ball well from deep. A bit cautious on the ball but promising regardless. 7.5

Carrick – Kept things tight in the middle but there was little in terms of creativity going forward. 6

Mata – Involved heavily in United’s attack and was rewarded with a goal. Took it well and slotted home beautifully. 8

Memphis – Still struggling to find his feet in the league but at least he grabbed his first goal of the season. Decision-making is still a letdown. 5.5

Martial – Quickly running out of superlatives to describe his talent. Still don’t believe he’s 19. Phenomenal. 8

Rooney – A disappointing first half but grew into the game later on and broke his goal drought. 6

Schweinsteiger – It’s all too easy for him. Demonstrate superb skill in one instance in particular. 7

Jones – Fitted in seamlessly at the back. 7

Young – Great assist for Mata. 7

Louis van Gaal – Probably the first time all season we’ve started to see his philosophy falling into place. The passing was good, we were relatively tight at the back and movement off the ball was smart. A great performance that was also enjoyable to watch, which had been very rare under the current manager. Another thing which has been rare is his substitutions all being correct, as was the case today. Great performance all round as United go top of the league. 8
