Predicted: Strongest Manchester United lineup to face Valerenga on Sunday

Manchester United take on five-time Norwegian champions Valerenga in the penultimate game of their pre-season on Sunday. Jose Mourinho is likely to pick a strong starting lineup for the Oslo friendly as his side prepare themselves for the eagerly anticipated European Super Cup clash versus Real Madrid on August 8.

Injury Update: Both Ander Herrera and Juan Mata have recovered from their recent niggles, and they are expected to participate to earn some playing time during the game.

Formation: 4-2-3-1

Lineup:

David de Gea starred in goal during the pre-season friendly defeat to Barcelona earlier this week. He will be replaced by Sergio Romero after he was left out of the travelling squad.

The defence could remain familiar to the 1-0 loss against Barca. Chris Smalling and Victor Lindelof are likely candidates to occupy the central defence although the former’s future still remains under question. Timothy Fosu-Mensah could take up the right-back role in Valencia’s absence with Matteo Darmian slotting on the left for Daley Blind, who has not had the best of pre-seasons.

Onto the midfield, Ander Herrera could return to the United setup alongside Paul Pogba following his recovery from a minor rib injury. Marcus Rashford had enjoyed his time in the United States with three goals in five outings, and he is a potential starter on the left side of the attack.

Similarly to Rashford, Jesse Lingard has impressed during the tour, but he has been left out of the squad due to a muscle fatigue. He could be replaced by Juan Mata on the left wing with Henrikh Mkhitaryan featuring in the number ’10’ role.

Romelu Lukaku has comfortably settled as United’s frontman with two goals in five outings, and he is the prime candidate to lead the line for the Red Devils in Oslo.
