Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer is convinced that Manchester United star Romelu Lukaku will score at least 25 goals during the current Premier League campaign.
Manchester United splashed around £75million to acquire the services of Romelu Lukaku from Everton this summer and there is undoubtedly a lot of pressure on the shoulders of the Belgian international to perform due to his huge price tag.
Nonetheless, Lukaku certainly did not seem to be fazed by the expectations of him as the 24-year-old kicked off his Premier League debut for United with a stunning brace in the Red Devils’ fine 4-0 opening day victory over West Ham United at Old Trafford on Sunday.
It goes without saying that the former Chelsea man managed to impress many with his fine performances during the encounter against the Hammers and Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer has made a bold prediction about the new United star.
Speaking after the game, Shearer praised Lukaku’s “complete centre-forward performance” and has already claimed that the young striker will be able to score at least 25 to 30 goals during the current Premier League campaign.
He said, “It was a complete centre-forward performance. He was aggressive, he had pace, he gave his team-mates options and his touch was excellent. More important when you look at a centre forward, he has to deliver goals and he did that today. He was just superb and horrible to play against.
“What they had last year with Ibrahimovic was a very good player but someone who was coming towards the end of his career. What they have got now in Lukaku is a guy who is 24-years of age, who’s into his prime, who’s been around the Premier League for five years.
“Now I think he could go onto the next level. He will get more chances playing in a better team. He could, should and probably will get between 25 and 30 league goals this season.”
Shearer knows a thing or two about scoring goals, having managed a whopping 260 Premier League strikes during his illustrious career and his words will certainly come as a huge encouragement for Lukaku.
