Manchester United legend Paul Ince believes Alexis Sanchez’s arrival at Old Trafford could strengthen the club’s chances of securing the Champions League crown this term. The Chile international joined the Red Devils from Arsenal on Saturday with Henrikh Mkhitaryan going the other way in a straight player-exchange deal.

In a report covered by Evening Standard, Ince stressed that United remain the bigger club in England despite the recent rise of cross-town rivals Manchester City. Jose Mourinho guided the club to Europa League success during the previous campaign, and Ince feels his ex-club can now give a crack for the Champions League, which they previously won in Moscow in 2008.

“He’s a special player and the sort that doesn’t come around that often, and I’d say United’s hopes of winning their fourth European trophy have just got a lot more likely. It seems United, City, Liverpool and Chelsea were all after him. Sanchez choosing United sends a big message to those clubs, especially City,” he said.

There has recently been the talk of Sanchez arriving at Old Trafford owing to the wages on offer, but Ince had ridiculed talk of the sum involved with United having signed a world-class player, who he deems as ‘priceless’ in the current transfer market, he said: “Sanchez is a game changer. He’s priceless. All the talk of his transfer fee has been a joke.”

Sanchez was allotted the iconic number 7 shirt upon his arrival at Old Trafford, and the Chilean is in contention to make his competitive debut for United during Friday night’s fourth round FA Cup tie versus Yeovil Town at Huish Park.
