Raphael Varane could join Manchester United on one condition

Real Madrid could reportedly sanction the sale of Raphael Varane to Manchester United this summer, should Jose Mourinho decide to make a bumper offer for the centre-back. The France international was recruited by Mourinho for Los Blancos back in the summer of 2011 and he has since gone on to become the youngest player to win four Champions League titles.

According to Diario Gol, Mourinho could be reunited with the centre-back during the current transfer window, should United pay up a significant sum for the Frenchman’s services. The exact transfer valuation has not been revealed by the source but anything over £50m would certainly be considered expensive, given the position is not a priority for the summer.

United are well equipped in the central defensive department with Eric Bailly, Phil Jones, Chris Smalling, Marcos Rojo and Victor Lindelof capable of slotting into the role and the club may be better suited in finding a replacement in the left-back position.

Ashley Young did a credible job under the Portuguese tactician over the course of the previous campaign and there is certainly the need for a suitable replacement with Mourinho not having much confidence in the abilities of Luke Shaw. Juventus’ Alex Sandro has been underlined as a possible option to bolster the position, though talks have seemingly reached a standstill in recent weeks.
