Rashford and Bailly Start, 4-2-3-1: Man Utd’s Strongest Possible XI to Face Southampton

Manchester United will make the trip to the South Coast on Saturday to take on Mauricio Pellegrino’s Southampton. The Red Devils have made a superb start to their season with four victories and a draw in their opening five games, and they are currently atop of the table with Manchester City on 13 points. Jose Mourinho tested his bench strength during the 4-1 League Cup win over Burton Albion on Wednesday night, but he will be expected to return to his normal lineup for the weekend league clash.

Lineup:

Goalkeeper David de Gea was given a much-needed rest in midweek, and the Spain international will certainly resume his duties against Southampton. The backline could remain unchanged from the Everton game with Antonio Valencia and Ashley Young playing on either side of central defensive duo Eric Bailly and Phil Jones.

Nemanja Matic and Marouane Fellaini did a good job together against Everton last weekend, and Mourinho may not look to change the combination, although Ander Herrera is a better ball playing midfielder than Fellaini.

Marcus Rashford scored an impressive brace in a man of the match performance against Burton Albion, and this virtually guarantees him a spot on the left wing. Henrikh Mkhitaryan has already notched five assists in as many games for United, and he will start in his preferred number ’10’ position. Juan Mata has yet to contribute in the assist/goal tally this term, but his ability to thread in key passes gets him the nod ahead of Jesse Lingard and Anthony Martial.

Romelu Lukaku has scored seven goals in his opening seven games for Manchester United. The Belgian has missed some clear-cut opportunities, but he has managed to make for them by scoring vital goals for his side. He remains unopposed to start up front.
