‘There were contacts’, Real Madrid superstar confirms Manchester United interest

Varane Real Madrid

Real Madrid defender Raphael Varane has revealed that Manchester United have previously approached his representative over a potential move to Old Trafford. The France international has been regularly linked with the Red Devils following Jose Mourinho’s managerial appointment in the summer of 2016.

Mourinho had played a key part in signing Varane for Real Madrid, whilst he was their manager back in 2011, and the Frenchman has since shared a close bond with the 55-year-old despite the Portuguese returning to the English top-flight.

Speaking to Spanish radio outlet El Larguero, the three-time Champions League winner confirmed that there has been interest from the Red Devils in the past, he said, via Goal.com: “No, not directly. There were contacts, but not directly.”

Varane is no doubt one of Mourinho’s favourites, and the Portuguese tactician has tried to sign him from his time in west London. However, it now appears that any sort of deal is improbable, given the Frenchman only signed a new deal earlier in the season, which sees him tied to Real Madrid until 2022.

Regardless of this, United are being fancied to pursue at least one central defender during the summer, but this could coincide with the departure of either Phil Jones or Chris Smalling, both of whom have been associated with Everton of late.
