Manchester United have won four out of the last five games in all competitions but their overall performance has gone from bad to worse in recent times.
New head coach, Ruben Amorim, has been struggling to find a solution. United’s attack have been misfiring completely this season as Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee have scored only five goals combined in the Premier League.
News – Talks held – Man Utd have to agree £25m fee to get midfield signing done
Now, Spanish source, Fichajes, state that Man United have already started exploring options to replace Hojlund and have identified Atalanta star Mateo Retegui as a serious target.
The Red Devils hired the Dane for big money from La Dea to strengthen the frontline a few years ago, now, they are looking to raid the Italian side once again.
Gian Piero Gasperini’s side are known to sell players for big money after developing them and are now open to accepting offers of around £42m-£50m for the Italian international.
However, Arsenal and PSG have also expressed their interest in signing Retegui having been attracted by his recent displays so United will have to overcome stiff competition to get the deal done.
The 25-year-old joined Atalanta last summer after scoring nine goals in 31 games for Genoa last term. Upon moving to Gewiss Stadium, he has been in terrific form thus far this season, scoring 20 goals in just 18 Serie A starts.
At the weekend, Retegui scored 4 goals away from home in the league against Hellas Verona. He is the leading goal-scorer in the Italian top-flight with Moise Kean second in the race with 15 goals.
Man United need a prolific goal-scorer to resolve their goal-scoring issues and Retegui might be able to help them do that.
However, the Red Devils’ unsuccessful acquisition from Atalanta in the form of Hojlund raises the question mark of whether they should now go for yet another La Dea player to replace the Dane.
