Report – Man Utd agree £42m initial fee to secure signing

Ugarte Uruguay

It’s been a long time coming but it looks like Man Utd are finally set to land their preferred midfield target. Throughout the transfer window, this signing has looked imminent but it’s played out into a long-drawn transfer saga.

For a player that they don’t want to keep, PSG have prolonged this Manuel Ugarte transfer for way too long.

The audacity of being blessed with riches has helped the Ligue 1 giants from making Man Utd work to sign their preferred target.

As per ESPN, Man Utd have now agreed a £42m initial fee with another £8m in potential add-ons to secure the signature of the 23-year-old midfielder. Luis Enrique might not rate Ugarte but it’s clear that Man Utd think very highly of him.

The Uruguayan international is coming off an incredible Copa America campaign and looks like the perfect fit for what Man Utd want from a midfielder this summer. Ugarte could rotate with Casemiro and potentially replace him down the line when the time comes.

Reliable Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano, Ugarte has waited for a move to Man Utd for a long time. The Red Devils have also not approached any other midfielder as the 23-year-old has been their option #1, #2 and #3 for midfield.

Man Utd fans will need to be patient with Ugarte as if Erik ten Hag’s track record is anything to go by, he doesn’t generally throw a new signing straight into the starting XI.

With the exception of Antony (for a brief while), Andre Onana and more recently Noussair Mazraoui (he really doesn’t have any other option), the Dutch coach has preferred to ease in his signings.

With Casemiro still at the club and starting the season well, Ten Hag could choose to take him time before inducting Ugarte into the starting XI. Gradually, as the season plays out, one could expect the handing over of the baton to occur seamlessly from the Brazilian to the Uruguayan.

Ugarte is an investment for a decade and could alongside Kobbie Mainoo define Man Utd’s midfield for seasons to come. The Red Devils look set with their squad for the upcoming season and it will be a surprise if they add anyone else between now and the end of the transfer window.
