Spanish giants Barcelona are reportedly planning a winter approach to sign Manchester United midfielder Ander Herrera. The 28-year-old started the 2017/18 season as a regular on the substitutes’ bench, but recent injuries have assured him of a role in central midfield.
According to Don Balon, Barca boss Ernesto Valverde is looking into a long-term successor to Andres Iniesta despite the Spaniard penning a lifetime contract earlier in the month.
The report goes on to suggest that £75,000-a-week player is the leading candidate on their winter shortlist with Valverde having previously worked alongside the Basque player at Athletic Bilbao. Earlier, Mirror have also reported that Barcelona are set to make a move for the 28-year-old.
Herrera has just eight months of his existing United deal, and Barcelona are planning to test the club’s resolve in the New Year – with the Spaniard yet to sign a contract extension at Old Trafford.
United presently have the option of prolonging the midfielder’s stay by a further 12 months, but a long-term agreement is still far off with Herrera wanting assurances of regular first-team football.
Herrera has partnered Nemanja Matic at the centre of the park this month, but he is certain to return to the bench, once the likes of Paul Pogba and Marouane Fellaini make their injury comebacks.
