Robert Pires believes Man Utd ‘made a mistake’ selling 24-year-old

Bruma to replace Depay?

Robert Pires believes Manchester United ‘made a mistake’ selling Memphis Depay to Olympique Lyonnais, with the 24-year-old having been in such fine form since his Ligue 1 move last year.

United signed Depay from PSV Eindhoven in 2015 but he struggled for form at Old Trafford, scoring and creating 13 goals in 53 games, and sold to Lyon in January 2017.

Since the move, however, the Dutch international has impressed at the Parc OL, contributing 48 goals in 67 games in all competitions, and Pires believes the Red Devils may have been too hasty selling him three years ago.

He said to Bwin: “Memphis Depay is an outstanding player. He struggled at Manchester United because it is difficult to change country and enter a new club, a new language and a new environment at such a young age.

“He is now a very important player for Lyon and he is making a big difference in the crucial games. I think Manchester United made a mistake when they sold him and they could regret it.”

United did attach a buy-back clause to Depay when they sold him to Lyon so they could always bring him back to Manchester if they see fit. They’ll be happy to see Depay is finally coming of age after all his struggles in England, but it’s unlikely they will make a return just yet.

In addition to having the likes of Anthony Martial, Alexis Sanchez, Jesse Lingard, Juan Mata and Marcus Rashford for attacking options, manager Jose Mourinho made it clear that he wouldn’t be adding any more firepower this summer.
