Manchester United have had a long list of legendary shot-stoppers who have guarded the posts at Old Trafford with much aplomb.
The last man to hold that distinction was David de Gea, who was outstanding for the club during his time there.
News – Fee reduced significantly – Man Utd now have to secure £43.3million fee for signing
The Spaniard had single-handedly saved Man Utd from many seasons of mediocrity and it was only after his exit that it became increasingly obvious that all he had done was paper over some gigantic cracks.
His successor, Andre Onana, has had a torrid time in Manchester.
The Cameroonian international was signed with much hype, after a brilliant season with Inter Milan, where he led them to the finals of the Champions League with his heroics.
However, he has struggled to get going in England.
A reinforcement between the posts could be a necessity this summer and as per Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano via Give Me Sport, Aston Villa shot-stopper Emiliano Martinez is waiting of a call from Manchester United to seal the move this summer.
Here is what the Italian journalist had to say:
“There is Emi Martinez – he keeps on hoping for a call from Manchester United. He is open to the move to Manchester United. It depends on United and what they want to do for the goalkeeper. There will be internal conversations in the next days to decide.”
The Red Devils have been linked with Emi Martinez for quite some time now, but a move hasn’t yet progressed as expected. The World Cup-winning shot-stopper is expected to be available for around £30m-£34m this summer transfer window.
Sign him up
If the 32-year-old goalkeeper is willing to move to Man Utd, one wonders what the club is waiting for.
Emi has a certain aura about him in the way he plays that makes him much more imposing than he actually is and this is the kind of X-factor than Ruben Amorim needs.
A natural leader capable of organising the defence in front of him, signing the experienced Argentinian international would be a departure from all the mediocrity that Andre Onana has brought to the table and this is a transfer that makes a lot of sense.
Common sense tells you that Man Utd must be all over the deal to sign the Aston Villa goalkeeper but the Red Devils haven’t necessarily been that big on sensibility in recent years, with regards to how they have gone about their transfer business.
Thus, it remains to be seen how this Emi Martinez saga plays out and if he finds himself at Old Trafford wearing a red jersey next season.
