Belgium international Romelu Lukaku has revealed why he opted to join Manchester United from Everton during the 2017 summer transfer window. The 24-year-old was part of a repeated transfer saga last summer, but he ultimately joined the Red Devils regardless of the long-term interest from ex-club Chelsea.

Lukaku has since a success in the United ranks, contributing 22 goals across all competitions, and though his performances have been inconsistent against the elite clubs, he put in a strong performance against the Blues on Sunday to silence most of his critics.

The Belgian scored versus his former employers after his brilliant link-up play with both Alexis Sanchez and Anthony Martial. He continued to be a thorn for the Blues backline, and came up with an accurate cross for Jesse Lingard who scored the winner 15 minutes from time.

Many were surprised by Lukaku’s decision to reunite with Jose Mourinho earlier in the summer, but the striker has now stressed that he made the right choice to join the biggest club in the world, and is eyeing silverware in the long-run.

He said: “When I make a choice, it’s with my head and my heart. I made the right choice for me. I’m with a manager and players who push me every day. I’m playing for the biggest club in the world, but not only that, I want to win trophies.”

At 24, Lukaku has plenty of time to progress into a world-class marksman, and his aim for the season would surely be to touch the 30-goal mark, which he has failed to achieve in a single campaign to date.
