Manchester United favourite Ryan Giggs has urged the club’s hierarchy to spend on quality signings during the summer transfer window, if they are to close the gap on Manchester City next season.
The Red Devils sealed an astonishing 3-2 comeback win over the Citizens on Saturday, but this has not made much of a difference to the season with City 13 points ahead.
As a result, Jose Mourinho is likely to place the emphasis on lifting the Premier League crown next term, and Giggs has advised United to match Pep Guardiola’s side in the transfer market.
Speaking on Star Sports h/t Goal.com, he said: “They have to [improve]. They have to next year, they have to do that.
“Otherwise, City will win the league again, because of the quality that they’ve got, the transfer window, they’re going to improve, they’re going to get better players.
“Every season, whoever wins the Premier League, the teams beneath them have to improve. So Manchester United have to next year.”
Mourinho has already indicated his plans of bolstering the midfield department during the summer with Michael Carrick due to retire from the game whilst Marouane Fellaini also appears to be leaning for an exit.
The likes of Sergej Milinkovic-Savic and Jorginho have been associated with potential move to the club, and it will be interesting to see as to which kind of play, Mourinho prefers to recruit to his ranks.
The full-back positions are also a point of focus with Antonio Valencia and Ashley Young having entered the twilight of their respective careers with no genuine competition behind them.
