Manchester United legend-turned-pundit Ryan Giggs has urged Romelu Lukaku to find his goalscoring boots when the Red Devils host Manchester City in Sunday’s Manchester derby.
The Belgium international was in a purple patch early on during the initial phase of his United career as he notched 11 goals in the space of just 10 matches. However, his form has since taken a tumble with just two strikes in the last 13 games across all competitions.
Lukaku has failed to find the scoresheet against top-six opposition since his arrival at Old Trafford in the summer, but Giggs feels the Belgian must prove his worth by making a match-defining impact versus City.
“I think centre-forwards go through droughts and when you’re a Manchester United forward the scrutiny multiplies and that was always going to be the case,” he told Sky Sports News.
“I said at the start of the season Lukaku will be judged on the big games because he’ll score goals, there’s no doubt about that. The big games are what will define him as a being a really great United centre-forward.”
The 24-year-old ended a four-match goalless run by netting in the 2-1 Champions League win over CSKA Moscow in midweek, and the onus will be on him to provide the physical threat up front as United aim to create a new record by going 41 matches unbeaten at Old Trafford.
Although Lukaku has not scored regularly of late, his link-up play with his fellow attackers has earned him plaudits from Jose Mourinho, and the Portuguese tactician will most certainly stick with the Belgian for the derby, despite calls for Zlatan Ibrahimovic to start.
